It might be psychological - I suspect that both Gerrard and Lampard were keen, in the event, to avoid injury (in Gerrard's case, unsuccessfully) whereas Cole was still fighting for his place. On the other hand, I would think about Chris Waddle's point, made in commentary during the McClaren era friendly with Spain: technically superior Spanish players need less space before they are willing to contemplate making a pass (I think Waddle meant 2m of space as opposed to the 5m or above needed by England). Cole is, undoubtedly, technically the superior player. The England U-17s contain a fair few Coles, by all accounts.

OT (of course) but may this be a matter of sports psychology?

I watched most of the England-Japan game. I observed that Lampard and Gerrard, who have played so well for their clubs over the years, were passing badly. I wondered if the cause was the new design of ball. Then Joe Cole came on and passed with much greater accuracy. Is it simply that Cole adjusts well to international football and the other two don't? Is that because he doesn't need the comfort of clubmates around him, is it more that he doesn't become over-anxious in an England shirt, or is it that Lampard and Gerrard simply enjoy international football less than he does?

Highly likely to be Edison - the film comes from his studio, within months of his having established a workable film technique.
